"Why we do not accept the Jewish Calendar!"

The views and beliefs are of this writer only!

This year, the year 2000, many of us observed the Feast of Trumpets on September 28, while others observed it on September 30, two days later.

Lets review the commandment concerning the Feast of Trumpets. Lev. 23:23 thru 25 "And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying, in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest to you, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall do no servile work; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh.

This really is not hard to understand! In the seventh month on the first day. Not the second day, nor the third day, but the first day.

Lets ask questions: First, Does Yahweh change? Does Yahweh give any man the right to change this commandment? I think you would agree that the answer to both is "NO". Why then did we observe the Feast of Trumpets on September 28? The answer is quite simple. The conjunction occurred (Central time) at 8:15 p.m. on September 27 (Roman calendar). Because it was after sunset, we had to count it September 28 as New Moon Day, therefore September 28, was the first day of the 7th month.

Many for years have been blindly going by the Jewish Calendar for years, including this writer, thereby observing the wrong Holy Days.

Why was the Jewish Calendar two days off, thereby making Trumpets, Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles off two days? Read on!

History shows the Jewish calendar and the many that followed, was established in 359 A.D. The Roman Catholic Church would not, or could not trust the Jews in their calendar to produce a date for (Catholic) Easter. From the time the Temple was destroyed in 70 a.d. the Jews had changed their calendar many times because of disagreements within their court.

So, Hillel II set out with the permission of the Roman Pope Julian to establish a new calendar. His reasoning was that Jews around the world could observe the Holy Days on the same day.

What is the Postponement rules connected with the Jewish Calendar?

1. Trumpets cannot fall on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday.

If so, postpone one day.

2. If the molad (Conjunction) falls at noon or later, postpone one day.

If the next day is Sunday, Wednesday or Friday then postpone one more day.

3. In the Common Year, if the Molad (Conjunction) falls at D3 9H 204P or

later (Tuesday 204P after 3 a.m. or later) Postpone Trumpets to Thursday.

4. In the Common Year after a leap year only, if the Molad falls on D2 15H 589P or later

(i.e. Monday 589P after 9 a.m. Postpone Trumpets to Tuesday.

Where in scripture do you find this?

Answer: "No Where!"

"Another rule"

The Jewish Calendar sets the New Moon nearest the Vernal Equinox.

So, under their rule, you can start counting the new moon as much as 13 days before Spring gets here.

Also, the Jewish calendar calculates the 7th month then counts back to the 1st month (Abib) to set Passover. The scripture say, the first month is in the spring (Abib) Ex 12.1, not the 7th month. When did they start that? My best answer is when they came back from captivity in Babylon. Why? Where is that in scripture? Actually you are beginning Spring before it is Spring and indeed still in the winter period. That should help you understand why we are different one day at Passover and two days different at Trumpets, Atonement and Tabernacles in the year 2000. In the year 2000 the seventh Molad (month) falls September 28 in the afternoon. That is a Thursday. So, the postponement rule sets it to Friday, but their other rule says it cannot be on Friday, so now it is set to Sabbath. Thereby making Trumpets (not the first day of the 7th month) but the third day of the 7th month.

SCRIPTURAL? Definitely don't think so.

Then they count back to the first month from their postponement (of one day) and then count to Passover, making it one day later than we do. So, the first month conjunction is April 5, counting 14 days to Passover brings you to April 18. However by the Jewish rule, you will observe Passover on the 15th day of the first month and Days of Unleavened Bread on the 16th day in the year 2000.

The answer to the calendar question is usually this: Well, the Jews have the oracles of Yahweh, so we don't have to worry about it. In reality, that is a cop out to studying a very complex question. I myself have been guilty of that kind of statement. But, do the Jews have control over the Calendar or your very lives? Remember you can't pick and choose. If the Jews have control over you, then you must listen to every thing they say. "Right!"

Rom: 3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit [is there] of circumcision?

Rom: 3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

Well, you must ask the question; clearly there were at least three groups (that claimed to be the Shepherds of Israel)..See Zech: 11:8 Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul loathed them, and their soul also abhorred me. (many believe this is a prophecy of when Yahshua ended the Levite Priesthood.) Who were these three that claimed the right to shepherd Israel?

And they all disagreed with the calendar as well as many other things. For example:

There were about 6 different views of the calendar. These are very brief.

The Orthodox Jewish Calendar.

This calendar was instituted in 359 A.D. by Hillel II. This is the calendar that has the postponements. It computes the equinox at the present time, and it rejects the direct observation of the New Moon.

The Samaritan Calendar

The Samaritans held their Passover a day earlier or in the beginning of the 14th of Abib

The Sadducees Calendar

The Sadducees counted the wave sheaf after the weekly Sabbath during the days of U.B., thereby having a Sunday Pentecost. The kept the Passover at the beginning of the 14th of Abib. Separating the Passover from the Days of U.B.

The Karaite Calendar

The Karaites observes the new Crescent moon, but do it locally. They intercalate the year by depending on the crops subject to the weather. They also kept the Passover in the beginning of the 14th of Abib, and like the Sadducees counted the wave sheaf from the morrow after the weekly Sabbath during the days of U.B.

The Essene Calendar

The Essene feast days were always on a Wednesday. They did not observe the crescent moon. Instead the months were 30, 30, and 31 days long for each quarter of the year, hence 91 days per quarter. The year had 364 days.

The Pharisees Calendar

The kept the Passover at the beginning of the 15th of Abib. They combined the Passover and Days of U.B.

Also, the Pharisees counted Pentecost from the first High Sabbath of Unleavened Bread, while the Sadducees counted Pentecost from the Weekly Sabbath, which falls within the Days of Unleavened Bread.

There are many other disagreements as well.

SO, let's ask the question again,"Which Jew?"

Back to Paul and the Roman church. The Apostle Paul was dealing with a problem with the Roman church, not unlike the other churches in Asia. Who was attending the Roman church?

That seems to be apparent. Jews and Gentiles. Remember, that the other tribes of Israel had long ago, been scattered. The only ones around were the Jews (a nickname of Judah).

Sure, the Jews got the "oracles of Yahweh", along with the other tribes. Think back to when Yahweh brought the nation of Israel out of bondage of Egypt. He brought them to Mt. Sinai to the very foot of the mountain.

"Who was there at Sinai?"

The answer of course is: All the tribes of Israel, plus a multitude of others that came out of Egypt with Israel.

So, where is the scripture that states they received the oracles and have authority over the calendar as well as other things.

The answer is easy.

The Apostle Paul is clearly just making a comparison between the two factions in the Roman Church. He explains that The Jew had greater light, more knowledge, better privileges, and higher honors. The greatest advantage was that they had the oracles of YAHWEH, the Holy Scriptures, and hence the promises which revealed a Messiah of mankind. This was not the only advantage, but simply the first. But now the Gentiles also have it. To the Jew first, then to the Gentiles as Paul says many times. Please turn to and read Chapters 2,3 and 4 to understand what the Apostle Paul is saying.

Matt: 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

Matt 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, [that] observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

Following the life of the Messiah, you will find many things that He never followed in regard to the Scribes and Pharisees. In fact most of the time, they criticized Him for not doing as they said and as they did.

They were not successors in his office as a legislator and mediator, but they read the Law that Moses was given, and explained it to the people. The people were to regard them so far as they spoke consistent with the law.

Clearly, the Scribes and Pharisees read the torah, or the laws given in the books of the law. Then went out and did as their traditional laws (Talmud) said. Yahshua said "Don't do as they do." Clearly, they would have read the laws concerning how to count the Holy Days but they counted them the way they wanted.

Did the Apostles follow the Scribes and Pharisees? Well, lets see.

In the book of the Acts, Chapter 5:28 thru verse 40 we find Peter and others were arrested and brought before the Sandrehin because they were teaching in the Name of Yahshua. The Sandrehin commanded them to never teach in the Name of Yahshua again, beat them and released them.

Did the Apostles do as commanded?

The rest of the book of Acts shows clearly, the Apostles did not do as the Sandrehin said. They went right ahead teaching in the Name of Yahshua.

You can't pick and choose, if you accept that the Jews have the oracles of Yahweh, and they have authority over us.

After examining the Jewish calendar in detail, many have decided it is simply "not scriptural". So, what then is the answer? Are we to follow it anyway, or attempt to find the truth in order to observe Yahweh's Set-Apart Days. This is a decision each of us must make.

A Gentleman I know once remarked "I never saw a calendar that was not man-made". And of course, he was correct. There is no calendar, as we understand calendars in the Bible. Only scriptures that tell us how to count the Set-Apart Days. Because we have lived with the present calendar and have considered it correct, taking for granted the days of the month etc. It just might be why we really don't understand Yahweh commandments in regard to counting the Set-Part Days.

So, realizing that we are also human, we prayerfully, and honestly have attempted to search the scriptures to find Yahweh's will in this matter.

Perhaps it is wrong to call what we found a Calendar; maybe it is just an understanding.

In the book of Genesis we find this scripture:

Gen: 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

So, the lights, sun, moon and stars are for seasons, days, and years.

That is not so hard to comprehend! The sun sets in the west and starts the period of time we call the day. It is our sign for days. Without it, we could have no period of time known as day.

David writes in Psalms 104:19:

Who appointedst the moon for seasons; the sun knoweth his going down. I

That is a MIRACLE of Yahweh work. The Sun does what Yahweh designed it to do.

But, it also does more a great deal more that for mankind, for finding the Set-Part days.

It tells us the seasons!

Now another Miracle happens according to Yahweh's time clock that He set in motion, and keeps it in motion. It is what is called the Vernal Equinox and the Autumn Equinox. A time when Yahweh causes the sun to follow the equator totally within the suns courses. It is a MIRACLE that Yahweh causes to occur, twice a year by His time clock.

When this happens, day and night are both equal to each other. And Spring begins that very time. Yahweh is saying "Children, its time to plant."

Spring does not occur until the V.E. takes place.

Then in towards the end of the year, comes the Autumn Equinox, when in essence, Yahweh is saying "Children, it time to reap what you have sowen."

So, YHWH has established our seasons for us. Should we accept His time frame to commence the beginning of Spring? I think the answer is yes!

One commentary puts it this way: "For days and years; for "signs" of good and bad weather; for the times of ploughing, sowing, reaping, &c. and for the "seasons" of summer and winter, spring and autumn; to set-apart the beginnings of months, and the times of the Feasts; for "days" by a circular motion for the space of twenty four hours; and for "years" by annual motion.

Interesting constellation maps and useful calendars were developed by several ancient peoples, notably the Egyptians, the Mayans, and the Chinese, but the Babylonians accomplished even greater achievements.

It was their custom to designate as the beginning of each month the day after the new moon, when the lunar crescent first appears after sunset.

Originally this day was determined by observations, but later the Babylonians wanted to calculate it in advance. About 400 BC they realized that the apparent motions of the sun and moon from west to east around the zodiac do not have a constant speed. These bodies appear to move with increasing speed for half of each revolution to a definite maximum and then to decrease in speed to the former minimum. The Babylonians attempted to represent this cycle arithmetically by giving the moon, for example, a fixed speed for its motion during half its cycle and a different fixed speed for the other half. Later they refined the mathematical method by representing the speed of the moon as a factor that increases linearly from the minimum to maximum during half of its revolution and then decreases to the minimum at the end of the cycle. With these calculations of the lunar and solar motions, Babylonian stargazers could predict the time of the new moon and the day on which the new month would begin. As a by-product, they knew the daily positions of moon and sun for every day during the month.

Vernal Equinox

One of two times of year when the sun's position makes day and night of equal length in all parts of the earth. The vernal equinox occurs around March 21 and marks the beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere.

The function of Stonehenge has long been a matter of conjecture. In 1964 the American astronomer Gerald S. Hawkins reported findings obtained by supplying a computer with measurements taken at Stonehenge together with astronomical information based on celestial positions in 1500BC when Stonehenge was in use. According to Hawkins the Stonehenge complex could have been used to predict the summer and winter solstices, the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and eclipses of both the sun and moon. Moreover, a variety of other information pertaining to the sun and moon could also be predicted with remarkable accuracy. Hawkins concluded that Stonehenge functioned as a means of predicting the positions of the sun and moon relative to the earth, and thereby the seasons, and perhaps also as a simple daily calendar.

The question of how do we know when the V.E. occurs is really not that hard. As shown above, many nations knew exactly how to do that. Today, we have many other sources as well.

So, we have a beginning to our study on counting towards Yahweh's Feast Days.

Understanding no.1 "Let our Creator give us the sign, first".

What is the New Moon? Was it the "Conjunction" or the "Crescent"? More later on that.

And now we come to Moses! When Yahweh first told him it was the New Moon and to start counting. Ex 12:2 This month [shall be] unto you the beginning of months: it [shall be] the first month of the year to you. So, we have a beginning of months. The word translated Month is:

2320 chodesh {kho'-desh} from 2318;

TWOT - 613b; n m 1) the new moon, month,monthly

1a) the first day of the month 1b) the lunar month

This month is also call "Abib" or "Green ear month". This is the beginning of Yahweh's new year. It comes in the spring when plants begin anew, not in the dead of winter, as the Roman calendar indicates. Remember the Jewish Calendar erroneously calculates the 7th month instead of this first month.

But, in this verse we are not told what is the New Moon, or whether it is the conjunction or the Crescent moon.

So how did Moses know? The evidence shows that the Egyptians knew exactly how to calculate the conjunction of the moon. Moses was raised in the house of Pharaoh.

Is that how he knew?

Before we deal with the New Moon, let's remember some of the other scriptures that will give us some insight in regard to the time of this New Moon. Ex 9:31 And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley [was] in the ear, and the flax [was] bolled.

Ex 9:31 And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley [was] in the ear, and the flax [was] bolled.

Ex 9:32 But the wheat and the rye were not smitten: for they [were] not grown up.

How much time before the beginning of months was this plague? Notice Ex 10:4 "The plague of the locusts". Notice Ex 10:22 "The plague of Darkness" Notice Ex 11.1 "The time involved with Moses going to Pharaoh and returning to his camp".

"The Barley was in the ear."

The Barley grows in the spring and comes in the ear after spring arrives. How does spring arrive? Yahweh performs a miracle and provides us with the sign of the V.E.

How much time is involved from the time the Barley is in the ear and the time of harvesting the Barley? As much as 2 to 3 weeks.

Would you say this New Moon was after the V.E.?

Before we deal with the "Conjunction or the Crescent", lets deal with the Barley.

Ex 9:31 And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley [was] in the ear, and the flax [was] bolled.

Ex 9:32 But the wheat and the speit were not smitten: for they [were] not grown up.

It seems pretty clear here that the Barley was at a young stage of development, while the wheat was not grown. Also, Barley at a young age would be ruined by hail, while if it was ripe, ready to harvest, would only have the seeds knocked out and could be picked up off the ground.

A little about Barley and how it is harvested.

In today's world, barley is combined with machinery. But, before that, it was cut with a sickle. It was cut when it was about ripe, but not quite. There was a reason for that. If it were totally ripe, the barley seeds would fall out when the sickle cut them. So, in order not to lose their grain, they cut it about 2 weeks before the harvest, tied it into sheaves, took it to the threshing floor to dry, see the book of Ruth, then after it was dry, it was harvested by "waving", "shaking", "beating" etc. Before that occurred, they were (each family) a sheaf to Jerusalem to be waved before Yahweh. Lev 23. At that time it was the beginning of the Barley Harvest.

This is paraphrase from the "Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening".

Under the heading "Barley" it says to grow barley as you would wheat. Barley is harvested the same as wheat: cut, bundled and shocked to dry.

Under the heading "Wheat" it says that as it ripens, wheat turns dull yellow, and the kernels become brittle, BUT, if you thresh by hand, cut the wheat when it is still slightly green. The stalks should be yellow with green shot through them. It must be bunched for threshing. Tie the bundles, allow them to dry. The grain will ripen in about two weeks and can then be threshed.

I think it is interesting that a farmer knows exactly how to cut, dry and harvest the Barley. This writer had a hand in that when he was young.

As a young boy growing up on a small dirt farm in southern Indiana, farming with a team of horses, we cut wheat and barley the same way Israel did in the old days. We cut it with a mowing scy, gathered the wheat or barley up, laid it in sheafs in the back of a wagon, pulled by a team. Then we would allow it to dry, and all neighbors would take their wheat or barley to the only neighbor who had a threshing machine to get it harvested. It was a grand day as the neighbors would gather, while the ladies would prepare a meal outside under a large tree. Each farmer would take his turn pulling his wagon up to have it threshed. You cannot cut wheat or barley when it is totally ripe as all the grains will fall out on the ground. Recently, I went to the state fair in Missouri. While sitting down to a meal, I was able to engage a couple of very elderly men who were retired farmers. I took them back before modern machinery in their memory. They both described the way barley was harvested like I have said above. I suggest any reader to search out a elderly farmer in his 80's or so and ask him about harvesting barley or wheat!

Another thing that you read a lot about nowdays. "When the barley is abib". That is a strange statement. Abib is the name of a month, not a condition of barley.

The month of Abib is the month when the barley has reached the stage to harvest. The Barley 2-3 weeks or 15 to 21 days after the beginning of the month. The month "Abib" could be called the month when the Barley is green and when it is ripe to harvest.

Young, tender Barley?

Many today seem to think the Wave Sheaf was of Young, tender Barley. Does this sheaf represent the Messiah, Yahshua? Of course it does. Was He young, tender?

No, He was fully mature, ripe just as the Sheaf should be, ready to harvest.

There is one scripture that throws folks a curve. It is:

Deut: 16:9 Seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee: begin to number the seven weeks from [such time as] thou beginnest [to put] the sickle to the corn.

The word time used in this scripture can be rendered "season".

Clearly in the following scriptures the time to count from is found here:

Lev 23:15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven Sabbaths shall be complete:

Lev 23:16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh Sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.

If you followed the Jewish Calendar in 1999, there was no Barley for the wave sheaf offering. That was attested to by many in Israel attempting to find barley growing.

Here is one report about the barley in 1999!

Karaite Korner Newsletter Barley (Abib) Report March 21, 1999

Today my wife and I went to look at barley fields next to the Arab village of Hizma (near Jerusalem). We looked at fields which I had previously inspected and mentioned in an earlier report. The barley in these fields had grown very little in the last 2 weeks and was still small plants which may never reach maturity because of the drought. We then inspected several fields to the west of the village which we had not previously checked and found much more promising results. The barley in the second set of Hizma fields was lush and green. Most of it had not headed, that is the heads had not come out of the stalks. We found a few stalks that had headed and already had the beginning of a seed that contained a cotton-like substance (very early stage). These crops will almost certainly reach full maturity (eventually) and seem to have survived the drought.

This may be because they are situated in a wadi through which the rainwater naturally drains off the adjacent mountains. I doubt these fields will be Abib by the end of the month as will be the case with barley in other areas but the barley never ripens all at once. This is why it is important to look at numerous fields in different parts of the country.

The barley on Mount Scopus might be Abib in 2 weeks, at least some of it. The spontaneous barley from the Negev described in the first report as "Between water and wax" will definitely be Abib 2 weeks from now (by the beginning of the next lunar month) and will be ready for harvest 2-3 weeks after that, in time for the wave-sheaf offering and when the scythe commences on the standing grain.

P.S. We just carried out an experiment on barley gathered from Mount Scopus and the fields near Hizma. The barley stalks from Mount Scopus used in the experiment had entered the early "Between Wax and Water" stage while some were still in the water stage. The barley stalks from Hizma used in the experiment had just headed and were before the water stage (with part of the seed having a cotton-like texture).

Because the moisture content in the stalks was so high we were only able to remove the seeds by painstakingly opening up the husks and removing them one at a time. We then put the seeds into a dry frying pan on a low heat. The seeds which were in the very early stage with the cotton-like substance were tiny and dried out in the frying pan producing a microscopic crunchy dot. The seeds in the water stage and early "between wax and water" stage dried out in the frying pan and produced a crunchy flat skin, the inside of the seeds having completely evaporated.

We also put stalks in the early "between water and wax" stage in the frying pan without having removed the seeds, thinking that once the stalk was dried out it would be easier to remove the seeds. The result was that the seeds dried out into a flat crunchy skin that fused with the stalk and could not be removed.

Nehemia Gordon The Karaite Korner Jerusalem, Israel This is just one of the reports from Israel during that time. It seems clear; there was no "barley" for the "wave sheaf" if you followed the early new moon and the Jewish Calendar.

It was because the Jewish Calendar counted the New Moon (Spring) before the Vernal Equinox occurred. In other words, they set Abib in the days of winter instead of Spring.

However, for many of us, who realized that and waited for the New Moon after the V.E., there was plenty of Barley, just right for the Wave Sheaf.

One of the first things we need to do is to take a look at the phases of the moon. The moon travels in a counter clockwise orbit around the earth. The orbit is more oval in structure, rather than circular. The time of the moon’s orbit varies each and every month.

So, periodically Yahweh’s law comes into effect and a Miracle occurs. Yahweh causes the moon, sun, and earth to come into direct alignment with each other. And this is a sign for mankind to begin to count, for the Holy Days.

The time for counting starts when the moon is positioned exactly in alignment between the earth and the sun. Remember in Scriptures where it says the sun and moon, and stars are for signs. I have not remarked on some of this before, because of fear of being perceived as getting into astrology. But now, I have concluded there is a great deal to be learned in studying the alignment of the stars and the planetary bodies. But this is another story. History records that many nations were able to calculate the conjunction exactly. For example two of them, Egypt and Babylon (although they only calculated to find when the crescent would take place). The ancient Aztec’s were more than capable of determining the conjunction as well. Any man or women with the proper talents or gifts can do this quite easily.

At the conjunction, the moon is very different than at any other time of its orbit. It is totally obscured to the eye. It cannot be seen. As a result of this, you will not be tempted to look up see the moon and worship it, as Yahweh has warned against.

The moon in this phase is now emitting a thin line of light. Many religious people today use this method of counting to determine the days. The nation of Islam uses this, among others. If you will take notice, on the top of their temples the crescent moon, which they describe as having horns is quite visible. Where did this originate? The symbolism of using horns came from Babylon, because of the worship of cows and the sun and moon. Babylon utilized it and used the crescent as part of worship toward other gods. There is a great deal of research available on this.

Abraham lived in Ur and later Haram where it was the center of crescent worship of the moon-goddess Ishtar called Ningal in Ur.

She has had many names in many different nations- Her worship required licentiousness, sacred prostitution in connection with her temples-her priestesses entertained male worshippers in disgraceful ceremonies-Every maid, wife or widow had to officiate at least once in her lifetime in these rites-Sin-the moon-god was the deity of Ur.

Yahweh called Abraham out of Babylon, as He calls us today.

There is a time the moon is different from any other. That is at the conjunction. From the time the moon starts its orbit at conjunction, it travels around the earth, until its journey is completed. Then it is renewed by Yahweh to begin the start of a new month, and does exactly what Yahweh has designed it to do. This is the time the Father brings it into alignment with the earth and the sun. What a miracle that is, when this takes place.

King David knew this, and has informed us in Scripture!

Psa 81:3 Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

Let us analyze this, and determine what David was saying. This should be obvious that David is talking about the Feast of Trumpets. That is the day of the New Moon.

The words "New Moon" is translated from:

02320 chodesh kho' -desh from 02318;

Taken from the root 2318

1) the new moon, month, monthly 1a) the first day of the month

The root word.

a primitive root

AV-renew 7, repair

1) to be new, renew, repair

Examples of how this word is used in other scriptures:

1 Samuel 11:14 and renew <02318 the kingdom there--

2 Chronicles 15:8 renewed <02318 the altar

2 Chronicles 24:4 repair <02318 the house of the LORD

2 Chronicles 24:12 carpenters to repair <02318 the house

Job 10:17 Thou renewest <02318 thy witnesses

Psalms 51:10 renew <02318 a right spirit within me.

Psalms 103:5 thy youth is renewed <02318

Psalms 104:30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest <02318 the face of the earth.

David chose to use the word "Codesh" which comes from the root word "Chadesh"... This word means to renew, repair, be new, bring back.

But David could have chosen the Hebrew word "Saharon", which means Crescent moon. But he did not. More on the Crescent moon later.

But David chose the word "Chadesh? Meaning new moon.

"The time appointed" This seems to be a bad translation.

In the NIV it is translated "Full Moon". Well all know we can't have a full moon on the first day of the month. So what is the real meaning here. The word "appointed" is translated from the Hebrew:

3677 kece' {keh'-seh} or keceh {keh'-seh}

Which is from the root:

3680 kacah {kaw-saw'}

Which means: to cover, conceal, hide

So, what David is really saying is "Blow up the trumpet on the first of the month (7th month), in the time of the hidden moon, on our solemn feast day.

What is the New Moon?

The hidden Moon, when totally dark is a conjunction with the sun, and earth. A miracle of Yahweh's time clocks in action.

Another example from King David

How could David make these statements with such certainty?

1Sam 20:5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow [is] the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third [day] at even.

Jonathan also, knew with certainty that tomorrow is the New Moon? How?

1Sam 20:18 Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow [is] the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

There was no written and saved history, before the Jews came back from Babylon. We know how it was done then. Witness's were sent out, and when they saw the crescent moon, they lit a fire on the mountain, then came back to Jerusalem to be questioned by the Sanhedrin....Well, that took some time, did it not.

But how did David know that tomorrow was the new moon?

Well, could he have looked up in the sky and saw the conjunction and said tomorrow is the Crescent moon and that is the New moon? Hardly possible. You can not see the moon when Yahweh is renewing it. It is dark.

So, how could he have known?

Some say, they were calculating it. Well, many nations knew how to do that as well as Israel.... Others say, well this dinner David was talking about was preplanned ahead. And some say, the kings always invited envoys from other parts of Israel to attend. Still more have concluded that it had to have been planned for quite a while. So, calculating the conjunction is how they did it.

Many feel that, David looked up and saw the last Crescent moon, thereby knowing tomorrow is the new moon. You can see the last crescent just about daybreak the day before conjunction. Is that what David saw?

How could David have stated with certainty, that "tomorrow is the New moon"?

If they were doing it in the way it was done when they returned from Babylon, David would have had to wait until they saw the Crescent moon, about sunset, then waited until the witness had returned to Jerusalem, then word would have been brought to the King. Seems likely that process would take a bit of time...But what if, it was cloudy and overcast that evening, then they would have had to wait another day. Is that scriptural?

Argument for the Crescent

Some say according Gesenisus"Hebrew/Chaldee Lexicon that the term "Hodesh"(2320) came from # 2318 which means to be new, or to polish a sword. Etymologist has well observed that its PRIMARY SENSE IS THAT OF CUTTING AND POLISHING.. and the signification of newness appears to proceed from that of a sharp polished splendid sword. We see that a new moon CANNOT mean a full moon. A full moon in no way appears as a polished sword ( or a conjunction moon). IN THE CASE OF A TRUE NEW MOON, IT APPEARS AS A SCIMITAR, OR CURVED SWORD" (end of quote)

Yes, we knew of this definition early on in our search for the truth. There are many Hebrew scholars that certainly disagree with the "Gesenisus". I really have not found any other definitions that agree with "Gesenisus".

Some would say, the Crescent does not look like a sword. But I would disagree with that. Searching has shown us that the Arab (Muslims) built their swords in a Crescent style. We understand that Islam counts from the Crescent, in fact many Crescent moons appear on top of their Mosques as previously stated. And there is evidence in the digs around Ur and Haram (where Abram was called from), that on top of the temple built for the moon god; a crescent moon was there.

Crescent Moon

The Crescent Moon - Saharon

Isa 3:18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of [their] tinkling ornaments [about their feet], and [their] cauls, and [their] round tires like the moon,

The NIV has this: In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,

The word moon is translated from:

7720 saharon {sah-har-one'}

1) moon, crescent, as ornament

Other places this is found:

Jud 8:21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man [is, so is] his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that [were] on their camels' necks.

Jud 8:26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that [was] on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that [were] about their camels' necks.

What about this?

History seems to indicate that after the Babylonian captivity that the first visible crescent was sighted. The sighting was then checked and verified by a great assembly, which was the forerunner of the Sanhedrin.

Was this the way they observed the new moon before the exile? I have not found any evidence to show it. The fact is there are few references to a calendar before the exile.

The only proof we have is the history recorded by the Pharisees who are the Rabbis of today. The next problem we have is that while in Babylon the leaders may have taken on more than just the Babylonian names for the months. The fact is, as the bible itself reveals, the Israelites were influenced by the people around them.

"The Saharon, which was probably made of metal and had the form of a crescent, i.e., the crescent moon. It was worn by women (Isa. 3:18), and by kings (Jud. 8:26), and tied to the necks of camels (Jud. 8:21) to protect them from the Evil Eye.

The crescent was a favorite amulet among many peoples of Western Asia, and it represented to them the strength and protection of the waxing and not the waning moon. " (Budge, pg. 213) "Before Jacob went to Bethel to present himself before Yahweh he made all his people to hand over to him their "strange gods" and ear-rings (i.e., crescent-shaped amulets), and he hid them under the oak which was in Schechem(Gen. 35:4)" (Budge, pg. 214)

Of these references, the scriptural evidence is pre-exodus with the exception of Isaiah which talks of a time when the daughters of Jerusalem will have their jewelry taken away including crescents. It is also interesting to note that the ancient Babylonian's had a Elohim (god)(they called "mighty one" whose name was Sin and whose symbol was that of a crescent. "The Babylonian moon-god Sin (su'e) stands in a crescent-moon, his symbol. Agate Neo-Babylonian seal c. 7th - 6th cent. B.C." (The Illustrated Bible Dictionary, pg. 1023)

There is a word in Hebrew that means crescent moon that word is Saharon yare'akh. The word saharon is in the scriptures and refers to amulets as seen above. But it is interesting that the Hebrew word for new moon (Chodesh) and crescent moon (Saharon yare'akh) are not the same. If there was a word available to describe what moon the new moon is and if the new moon was a crescent, then why isn't it used in the scriptures.

We can see that the first visible crescent (waxing) is used by the neighbors of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their descendants the Israelites as a protective amulet as well as worshipped as a deity. If you read throughout the Holy Scriptures you will see that the Israelites followed after these peoples and practices their idolatries. Why else would Elohim say that he would take away their crescents. While I will not try to tell you that it proves that the crescent is not the new moon, I find the evidence of crescent-moon worship disturbing. Would Yahweh link himself to pagan practices and rites, I think not!.

Was the Father happy with Israel and Judah before captivity? And what caused them to go into captivity.

Yahweh's command!

Deu 4:19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, [even] all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which Yahweh thy Elohim hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

Did they do just that?

Jer 8:2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

Notice they loved, served, walked with, sought and worshipped these things.

Why does Isaiah say this and Amos also.

Isa 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear [them].

Amo 5:21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

Why does he call them Your, not mine... Many say because they were unfaithful and didn't keep them right. But would he not say, you have corrupted my New Moons and Sabbaths (appointed feasts).

How then, did they worship the sun and moon?

Crescent moon is part of the worship of Astarte. But you can look that up. Today the Muslims have a crescent moon on top of their temples. Many look at the crescent and remark about the horns. It was all part of pagan worship. The horns of the crescent being part of the cow worship.

Many today say they have to see the new moon as the first light. Well, that's what the Babylonians did? the first light.

Scripture tells us how they worshipped the sun.

Eze 8:16 And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD'S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, [were] about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

When did they do that? At the first light of the sun. Was that the way they worshipped the moon? Of course they did worship the moon.

Is this at least a part of the reason they went into captivity?

Other Scriptures

Deu 17:3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

2Ki 23:5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

2Ki 17:16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, [even] two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

2Ki 21:3 For he built up again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made a grove, as did Ahab king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.

Did they count the Holy Days right? Seems not to. Yahweh says He hates THEIR Feast Days.

What happened? They wanted to serve the gods of Babylon, so He sent them into captivity where they got these ideas.
